Causes of Menstrual Delay (Amenorrhea) and Menopause

Causes of Menstrual Delay

Menstrual delay refers to a woman with a regular menstrual cycle not getting her period on the expected date or having it late. All women have their own unique menstrual rhythms. When this rhythm is disrupted, the body's balance is disturbed, causing unease in women. In medical terms, menstrual delay is called amenorrhea. If a healthy woman does not get her period on the expected date, one of the first things that comes to mind is pregnancy. However, pregnancy is not the only cause of menstrual delay. In cases of menstrual delay, it is necessary to know the cause of amenorrhea and take precautions accordingly.

What Causes Menstrual Delay

Pregnancy is the leading cause of menstrual delay. Besides pregnancy, being under intense stress can also lead to menstrual delay and absence of periods. Medications used before menstruation can cause a delay in periods. A febrile illness can also cause irregular periods. Very thin women may not have regular periods due to low body fat. Being overweight is also a cause of menstrual delay. The period before menopause, known as the menopausal transition, is a time when ovulation and fertility decrease, leading to irregular periods. During this period, menstruation may be very light or absent altogether. Menopause is a period when women do not menstruate at all.
